In the first quarter of 2025, a total of 59 million PCs were shipped worldwide. This is a 4.8% increase compared to the same quarter in 2024, according to preliminary results from Gartner. In the U.S., PC shipments increased by 12.6%, reaching 16 million units in this period.
Rishi Padhi, a Research Principal at Gartner, explained, “The growth in the PC market can be seen mainly in the U.S. and Japan, but for different reasons.” Iin the U.S., PC shipments went up because companies stocked up on PCs ahead of expected changes in tariffs. This led to a 12.6% increase from last year. However, despite this growth, actual demand from customers remained cautious, even with many companies upgrading to Windows 11. In Japan, there was strong demand for business PCs as many companies replaced older PCs with Windows 11, and the use of Chromebooks also grew. This led to a significant shipment increase of 15.6%. Vendors took advantage of a program to replace old Chromebooks in schools, which helped keep sales strong.”
