Qualcomm Completes Modular Acquisition, Expanding Its AI Software Push Beyond Devices

Qualcomm Modular

Qualcomm has completed its acquisition of AI software company Modular. This deal gives Qualcomm a stronger software position in generative AI, agentic AI and data-centre computing. The acquisition is complete, and Qualcomm described the move as creating an open software foundation for AI workloads across its wider computing strategy.

When the deal was announced on June 24, Qualcomm was paying nearly $4 billion in an all-stock transaction, valuing Modular at $3.92 billion.

Modular’s platform is created to run across chips from Nvidia, AMD and other vendors, which puts Qualcomm closer to the software-led model that has helped Nvidia hold its AI lead.

Qualcomm’s quarterly results, released on the same day the acquisition was completed, said the company expects non-handset revenue growth to accelerate and highlighted the importance of data centre growth in its wider plan. The company also said the acquisition creates “an open software foundation for generative and agentic AI.”

What Modular adds to Qualcomm’s strategy

Modular’s core value is portability. Its software is built to let developers deploy AI across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs and custom ASICs, rather than forcing each workload to stay tied to one vendor’s stack. That makes the acquisition more strategic than a simple capability buy. It gives Qualcomm a way to talk to enterprises and cloud operators that want flexibility in how they deploy AI.

Modular was founded by Chris Lattner and Tim Davis, and its software stack includes tools such as Mojo and MAX. In practical terms, that gives Qualcomm a software portfolio aimed at making AI deployment easier across mixed hardware environments.

From an industry point of view, the most important part of this acquisition is Qualcomm’s attempt to make AI software portable across various types of hardware. That is a sensible bet in a market where enterprises increasingly mix accelerators from multiple vendors and do not want every workload locked to a single ecosystem.
