The current discussions and high-level meetings with Elon Musk suggest that Tesla will finally enter the Indian market. During a recent US visit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk. After that, Tesla announced the job opening of 13 positions, including vehicle service, sales, customer support, and operations. Initially, the showrooms are expected in Mumbai and Delhi; sources have revealed that Tesla has selected space to lease in the Aerocity area in New Delhi. In Mumbai, Tesla has chosen the Bandra Kurla complex area. According to a Reuters report, both locations’s showroom areas will be approximately 5000 sqft.
Elon Musk Tesla’s launch of its first retail operation is expected by April 2025. The company wants to start its business in India by selling imported cars from its Berlin plant, reported CNBC-TV18, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Tesla has not yet confirmed anything about the manufacturing of cars in India. The company has plans to expand component sourcing from Indian OEM suppliers, reported CNBC-TV18. Sales operations will focus on Mumbai and Delhi.
At the start, Tesla will launch affordable electric vehicles with a starting price of approximately USD 25000 (INR 21 lakh).
The decision to begin its operations in India comes after years of consideration and conversation; previous plans were hindered after a discussion on import tariffs. This time, high-level talks indicate that Tesla will finally enter the Indian automobile market.
Tesla also hopes for further reductions in import duties, which currently stand at 70%, in light of the reciprocal tariffs declared by the Trump government. While Tesla had earlier paused to enter the Indian market due to import duties concerns, India has reduced the customs duty on high-end cars costing over $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
