Siemens and the University of Michigan to create an online course to help people learn about metal 3D printing

Siemens Digital Industries Software is partnering with the University of Michigan (U-M) Center for Academic Innovation to encourage the use of additive manufacturing and prepare new workers in this field. They have developed a new online course called “Introduction to 3D Printing with Metals.” This course is free and available to everyone, including professionals, hobbyists, and students.

Siemens collaborated with Chinedum Okwudire, a mechanical engineering professor at U-M, and Dr. Nathaniel Wood to create this course. It teaches essential information about how to print with metals, how these processes work, their advantages and disadvantages, and their real-world applications.

Aaron Frankel, a vice president at Siemens, said, “Metal 3D printing has the potential to change how products are made, allowing for new designs and custom products at a large scale. To achieve this, we need a workforce that understands these processes and can solve real engineering problems.” Frankel also highlighted that the partnership with U-M combines their research knowledge with Siemens’ industry experience to create helpful learning resources for future engineers.

Okwudire added, “The aim of this course is to increase knowledge and interest in metal 3D printing among a diverse global audience, helping to move society forward with this transformative technology.” He noted that Siemens’ support has been very important in developing this course, and they want to create a workforce that is diverse, fair, and skilled in metal 3D printing.

The course, available on Coursera, covers everything from simple metal 3D printing techniques to more complex methods, including powder bed fusion and direct energy deposition. It guides participants from the design stage to the finishing touches on the parts. Learners will see examples, hear from industry experts, and get hands-on experience with 3D printing using accessible augmented reality tools.
