Vodacom Group, a major telecommunications and technology company in Africa, has announced a new partnership with Google Cloud. This collaboration aims to speed up Vodacom’s digital transformation by using Google Cloud’s advanced tools for data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to improve Vodacom’s main services and create innovative products and services designed specifically for the African market.

Through this partnership, Vodacom will utilize Google Cloud’s secure and scalable technology to combine its extensive data resources. They will also implement AI models such as Gemini, Veo, and Imagen across their operations.

This approach will enhance Vodacom’s efficiency and introduce new AI-powered services for consumers in Africa.

Shameel Joosub, the CEO of Vodacom, said, “By integrating Google Cloud’s data and AI solutions into our operations, we will modernize our system and change the way we work. This partnership is vital for creating solutions that respond to the specific challenges and opportunities in Africa, ensuring that the benefits of AI are available to millions of customers and businesses across the continent.”

Maureen Costello, Vice President at Google Cloud for the UK and SSA, said, “Google Cloud is pleased to partner with Vodacom to advance AI in Africa. By providing access to our most advanced generative AI models and leading data infrastructure, we are supporting Vodacom’s ambitious goal to create technology solutions that enhance the lives of people in Africa.”

The goals of this partnership focus on three main areas:

1. Data modernization and unification: Vodacom will move its major data systems onto Google Cloud’s data cloud, including BigQuery. This step is crucial for implementing large-scale AI models.

2. Faster AI adoption in Africa: Vodacom will leverage Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, such as the Vertex AI platform and Gemini models, to quickly integrate smart services into its products. This includes improving network performance, enhancing customer service with AI-driven personalized support, and fighting fraud with advanced machine learning techniques – making powerful AI tools more accessible to African consumers.

3. Innovation for the future: By utilizing Google Cloud’s AI technologies, Vodacom will focus on developing advanced solutions for the African market. Initial priorities include, new financial technology services, developing enterprise solutions, and designing user experiences that enhance access to content and education.
