Bharti Airtel appoints Shashwat Sharma as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) starting January 1, 2026. Soumen Ray has been appointed as the Group Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Gopal Vittal, who is currently the CEO for India, will become the Executive Vice Chairman. In his new role, Gopal Vittal will focus on the company’s overall strategy, managing investments, and planning for long-term success.
While Gopal Vittal was CEO, the telecom sector in India went through many shifts. There were price wars, industry mergers, increased data usage, and Airtel became known as a leading brand. As Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Vittal will work on planning for the future, improving technology and digital services, building networks, purchasing equipment, and developing leadership skills within the company. These areas are very important as Airtel faces more competition.
Shashwat Sharma is not an external; he understands the company very well. He has managed key areas of the business that drive Airtel’s revenue.
Shashwat Sharma joined Airtel in 2018 as Chief Brand Officer. He then became Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Consumer Business, and later, in 2023, he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO), where he led the main consumer operations. Before joining Airtel, he had important marketing roles at Hindustan Unilever, where he worked on big brands. Mr. Sharma has a Master of Business Administration (MBA)from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
This leadership transformation is important because Airtel must manage its business in India, as well as its projects in Africa, digital platforms, and infrastructure investments.
Airtel’s new leadership team will also affect the wider industry. As competition increases and technology changes quickly, it is important for the company to have both steady leadership and fresh ideas.
Soumen Ray will hand over his current responsibilities to Akhil Garg, who will become the Chief Financial Officer for Airtel India. Mr Garg has been with Airtel for 12 years in different finance and planning roles, and he is expected to continue providing strong financial management in India.
Airtel’s Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, said he is confident in the new leadership team. He stated that “change and continuity will go hand in hand” as the company works to become the best telecom company in the world.
These leadership changes are happening at a time when competition is increasing among India’s telecom companies, more people are using digital services, and customers’ needs are changing. By choosing leaders with strong experience in operations and finance, Airtel hopes to address challenges such as monetising 5G, growing its digital services, and managing investments, while keeping its network and customer base strong.
With Shashwat Sharma in charge of operations and Soumen Ray leading finance, Airtel aims to balance new ideas with careful planning. Gopal Vittal’s experience with strategy makes the leadership team ready to take fast action and also guide the company’s growth over the long term.
