IBM and AMD have teamed up to provide advanced AI technology to Zyphra, a research and product company based in San Francisco, California, focusing on open-source AI.
IBM will provide a large cluster of AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs hosted on IBM Cloud for Zyphra. In addition to the GPUs, the setup will include AMD Pensando™ hardware: Pollara 400 AI NICs and Ortano DPUs. The initial deployment went live in early September 2025, with planned expansion in 2026.
This will help Zyphra train very powerful AI models that can understand and work with different types of information like text, images, and sound. Recently, Zyphra received funding that valued the company at $1 billion. They plan to create a top-notch laboratory for open-source and open-science research aimed at improving new types of neural network designs and how machines learn over time.
This partnership includes the first major AI training cluster using AMD hardware on IBM Cloud, with the initial systems ready for Zyphra in September and more planned for 2026. Zyphra will use this setup to develop models that can handle language, vision, and audio, which will support Maia, a superagent designed to help knowledge workers in businesses. IBM and AMD are well-equipped to keep up with Zyphra’s growing needs for AI training.
Krithik Puthalath, CEO of Zyphra. “We are thrilled to collaborate with IBM and AMD to drive the future of open-source, enterprise-level intelligence.”
IBM and AMD are working together to create a new level of AI training technology. Last year, they announced plans to provide AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators as a service on IBM Cloud, which is known for its security, reliability, and ability to grow. This service will improve the performance and energy efficiency of AI models and high-performance computing tasks.
“Being able to handle AI projects more quickly and efficiently is crucial for both established businesses and new companies,” said Alan Peacock, GM of IBM Cloud. “We are proud to help Zyphra’s plan as we work with AMD to provide affordable and scalable AI technology.”
“The partnership between IBM and AMD is setting a new standard for AI technology, delivering innovation that clients need,” said Philip Guido, AMD’s Executive Vice President. “By combining IBM’s strong cloud services with AMD’s expertise in high-performance computing, we are helping Zyphra’s important work in AI, which enables businesses everywhere to become smarter and achieve real benefits.”
IBM and AMD are paving the way for new AI technology, improving performance, efficiency, and scale for businesses of all sizes. Their hybrid technology setup helps businesses grow their AI capabilities while offering options like hybrid multi-cloud to improve cloud value. IBM and AMD also recently announced plans to create next-generation computing systems called quantum-centric supercomputing. This will combine IBM’s strength in building the best quantum computers and software with AMD’s expertise in high-performance computing and AI acceleration.
