Ericsson is expanding its operations in India by developing a new Radio Access Network (RAN) Software Research & Development (R&D) center in Bengaluru.

The new R&D center will initially focus on developing features for 5G and 5G Advanced technologies used in Ericsson’s 5G baseband. This work will be done in close cooperation with Ericsson’s global RAN software teams.

It builds on previous investments (ASIC development, 6G research in Chennai etc), showing an increasing localisation of advanced telecom work in India

Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, said, “Establishing the R&D center in India for RAN software development is a major step to strengthen our R&D efforts in the country. By utilizing Indian software talent, we are also helping to build knowledge and support the telecommunications ecosystem in India.”

David Bjore, Head of RAN Software & Compute Platforms at Ericsson, said, “This latest R&D investment shows how important India is for our work on next-generation technology. We are building on the strong partnerships we have established in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Gurugram, and for the first time, we are developing this RAN software here in India. This is a significant development as it supports India’s growing tech industry and allows us to create solutions that can have a global impact.”

The move aligns with India’s ambitions: building advanced manufacturing, design and software capability (including in semiconductors and telecom) under programmes like “Make in India” etc. It supports India’s readiness for “6G” and beyond. Ericsson’s mention of a 6G program in India is a signal. India could become a key contributor to global standards, software stacks and RAN innovation, giving Indian tech talent and ecosystem a chance to influence global outcomes.
