ABB has expanded its partnership with Applied Digital, a builder and operator of high-performance data centres. The aim of this expanded partnership is to supply power infrastructure for Applied Digital’s second artificial intelligence (AI) factory campus located in North Dakota, United States.
The collaboration is delivering a new medium voltage electrical infrastructure for large-scale data centres that can meet the increasing power demands of AI workloads. This second order was placed in the fourth quarter of 2025, although financial details of the partnership have not been shared.
Applied Digital’s new Polaris Forge 2 campus, situated near Harwood, North Dakota, will cover 300 megawatts (MW) of AI data centres, which will be built in two phases, with completion expected in 2026 and 2027.
Through this partnership, ABB will provide low and medium-voltage electrical systems for one of the most advanced AI factory campuses globally, featuring top-tier efficiency and a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rate.
“Our collaboration with ABB shows Applied Digital’s commitment to changing the standards of data centre size and performance,” stated Todd Gale, Chief Development Officer of Applied Digital. “Polaris Forge 2 marks the next step in our AI factory model, starting with two buildings of 150 megawatts each, with potential for scaling. This will help us maintain our position as a leader in providing high-performance, energy-efficient AI infrastructure.”
“As AI transforms data centres, ABB collaborates with innovative digital infrastructure companies to develop advanced power system solutions,” said Massimiliano Cifalitti, President of ABB Smart Power. “The medium voltage system developed with Applied Digital represents significant progress for large-scale AI facilities. Our teams have worked closely from the beginning to identify ways to enhance efficiency, performance, and reliability while also reducing costs and speeding up the time to market.”
ABB and Applied Digital first announced their partnership in June 2025, which supports the design and development of Applied Digital’s first 400 MW AI factory campus, Polaris Forge 1, located in Ellendale, North Dakota. Both campuses utilise ABB’s innovative HiPerGuard medium voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) technology and advanced medium voltage switchgear. Transitioning a data centre’s power system from low-voltage to medium-voltage with HiPerGuard enhances power density and energy efficiency. It also enables data centres to grow in larger blocks of 25 MW, reducing the need for cabling and improving reliability.
