Amazon today announced more than US $35 billion investments in its India operations through 2030, with a strong emphasis on bolstering artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, boosting exports, and generating employment.
Amazon New Commitment
According to the Amazon, the fresh investment in India will span AI-driven digitization, expansion of logistics and infrastructure, export growth, and job creation. This new $35 billion pledge builds on Amazon’s prior investments, the firm has already deployed around $40 billion in India since 2010.
A key component of the plan is to strengthen AI and cloud infrastructure in India. Earlier announcements had promised about US $12.7 billion for data centre expansion and AI infrastructure across states like Telangana and Maharashtra.
India’s AI & Digital Ecosystem
Amazon says the expanded investment in India aims to align closely with national priorities, including digitization, small-business growth, and broader participation in the global economy.
Through this investment, Amazon hopes to:
- Provide more advanced AI-powered tools and infrastructure, not only for its own operations, but for millions of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India seeking to scale online.
- Expand its logistics and supply-chain backbone, enabling faster, more reliable e-commerce and export activity, a crucial enabler as India aspires to become a global manufacturing and export hub.
- Create employment opportunities, Amazon expects to generate up to 1 million additional jobs (direct, indirect, seasonal) in India by 2030 as part of this push.
Amazon investment in India comes at a time when global tech majors are significantly boosting their bets on India’s AI and cloud economy. Just a day earlier, Microsoft committed US $17.5 billion towards AI and cloud infrastructure in India, its largest-ever Asia investment.
All this underscores a growing recognition: India is emerging as a central hub in the global AI race, not just for talent and data, but increasingly, for infrastructure, deployment, and innovation.
