Ericsson and Supermicro Team Up to Enhance Edge AI Technology with 5G Connectivity

Ericsson and Supermicro have announced plans to collaborate on a project aimed at accelerating Edge AI technology. They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the combination of Ericsson’s strong 5G internet services with Supermicro’s advanced Edge AI systems.

This partnership aims to create packages that will:

– Provide powerful Edge AI features that use 5G connectivity as a major benefit.

– Make it easier to buy and set up a single solution that includes both AI technology and 5G internet.

As businesses begin to utilize AI in various areas, they require applications that can respond promptly. This need is driving the demand for Edge AI solutions that utilize AI models and services close to where the data is generated, rather than sending it back to a central data center.

The combination of Supermicro and Ericsson’s technologies will enable businesses in retail, factories, healthcare, and other sectors to quickly set up Edge AI systems alongside wireless connectivity. Supermicro offers a wide range of products to support Edge AI applications, including small devices and larger rack-mounted systems. These wireless systems can operate in various environments and deliver speeds comparable to those of wired connections.

Mory Lin, a Vice President at Supermicro, said, “Our advanced solutions let businesses use AI technology right where they need it.” He believes that using their systems with Ericsson’s 5G technology will allow companies to use AI in places where wired connections are not possible, such as smart traffic systems and manufacturing workplaces. Ericsson’s wireless technology helps businesses connect without using traditional wired services.

In situations where wired connections are hard to find, 5G can be the main or backup option for important business tasks. With Ericsson’s technology, companies can also benefit from features like dividing the network (network slicing), using smart cellular networks, and strong security.

Jonathan Fischer from Ericsson stated, “We have been improving internet connections for businesses for nearly ten years. We are excited to partner with Supermicro to bring this same speed and flexibility to Edge AI technology.”

Some examples of where this technology can be used include:

– Retail: Speeding up checkout with real-time item recognition, improving inventory tracking, and preventing theft.

– Smart Factories: Monitoring and controlling machinery by processing data from sensors and cameras on-site.

– Traffic Safety: Improving road safety by analyzing data from cameras and sensors to manage traffic in real-time.

– Healthcare: Helping manage healthcare needs like tracking medical supplies to reduce waste and ensure availability.
