India’s digital landscape is thriving, and the App Store is at the heart of this transformation. A new study by Professor Viswanath Pingali from IIM Ahmedabad, published by Apple, found that the App Store ecosystem in India generated ₹44,447 crore ($5.31 billion) in developer billings and sales in 2024 alone. This report underscores the platform’s role as a catalyst for innovation and entrepreneurship.
A Model for Developers
The report shows that over 94% of the ₹ 44,447 crores went to app developers without paying commissions to Apple. This model supports Indian app developers, allowing them to create businesses and reach customers worldwide. In fact, the earnings of Indian developers have tripled in the last five years, with 80% of their money coming from users outside India. This means that local talent is doing very well on a global scale.
Different areas are driving this growth, showing the many needs of Indian users. Apps for food delivery, travel, gaming, and entertainment are popular among millions. The report breaks down revenue sources too: ₹38,906 crore from physical goods and services, ₹3,014 crore from ads in apps, and ₹2,527 crore from digital goods. These figures show a lively system where developers are earning money in various ways.
Helping Small Developers
One inspiring part of the report is the success of small developers. From 2021 to 2024, their earnings in India rose by 74%. This is partly due to Apple’s Small Business Program, which gives lower fees to certain developers. This program helps new startups and individual creators compete with larger companies. With 22 million weekly users of the App Store in India and 1.1 billion app downloads in 2024—38% of which are made by Indian developers—the App Store is a great place for new ideas.
For example, many new apps are being developed to meet India’s specific needs, like language learning tools and apps for small businesses. Indian developers are solving real problems while also making money. The App Store makes it easy for anyone with a good idea to turn it into a real app, promoting entrepreneurship throughout the country.
Safety and Trust are Important
Beyond just money, Apple’s focus on security has made the App Store more trustworthy. Between 2020 and 2023, Apple stopped over $7 billion in fraudulent transactions, helping both users and developers feel secure. This is especially important in India, where many people are beginning to use digital services. With millions of users downloading apps every week, the App Store’s careful review process and privacy protections help users feel safe, encouraging them to try out new apps and services.
