DeepSeek: The New AI Chatbot People Are Talking About

DeepSeek is a new AI chatbot that many people are excited about. It is currently the top app in Apple’s App Store in the US and the UK. DeepSeek is made by a Chinese start-up and is free to use. It aims to provide a better option for users looking for alternatives to OpenAI’s ChatGPT without having to pay.

Every day, new AI apps are added to the App Store. Many people look for the next best option to ChatGPT. Whether you like to use OpenAI’s tools or prefer Google Gemini, there is an AI tool for everyone.

Who Created DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is created by a company in Hangzhou, China. The main person behind it is Liang Wenfeng, who also helped start a hedge fund called High-Flyer, based on information from Chinese business records. It’s not clear how much money High-Flyer has invested in DeepSeek, but they share the same office building. High-Flyer also holds patents for technology that helps train AI models.

Recently, DeepSeek-R1 was released and is 20 to 50 times cheaper to use compared to OpenAI’s model, based on information shared on DeepSeek’s official WeChat page.

During an interview with CNBC, Alexandr Wang, the CEO of Scale AI, mentioned that DeepSeek has 50,000 Nvidia chips but did not provide proof of this information. He said sharing these details would break laws that prevent advanced AI chips from being sold to Chinese companies. DeepSeek did not respond to this claim.

DeepSeek currently only works with text and does not handle pictures or videos, but it is a promising start in competing with OpenAI.

DeepSeek vs. ChatGPT

Cost and Availability: Both chatbots have free versions that let you ask questions and get help. They also have paid versions, but ChatGPT charges $20 a month, while DeepSeek only costs $0.50 a month, which is much cheaper. Operating DeepSeek-R1 is also more affordable, costing about 27.4 times less per token compared to OpenAI.

Strengths and Weaknesses: –

DeepSeek:  Good at generating code (like Python and Java) and solving difficult math problems. It has some problems with sensitive topics because of rules from the Chinese government.

ChatGPT:  Better at telling stories jokes, and creating marketing content.   It is more updated on current global news and can respond quickly to recent events. ChatGPT sometimes struggles with giving appropriate responses and has biases from its training data.

Ethics and Privacy: DeepSeek aims to share its models openly, which promotes transparency and teamwork in the AI community. However, some people worry it may align too closely with government views because of its origins. DeepSeek also avoids answering sensitive questions about China.
