Google announced the opening of a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. This is part of a £5 billion investment in the UK over the next two years. This center will help meet the growing demand for Google’s services, like Google Cloud, Workspace, Search, and Maps. More than 250 companies helped build this facility, with most being local businesses.
The £5 billion investment will cover Google’s spending on new technology, research, and engineering work. This investment will support the UK’s AI industry and enhance cybersecurity. It is expected that Google’s investment will help create about 8,250 jobs each year in the UK.
Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, said, “Google’s £5 billion investment shows confidence in the UK economy and our relationship with the US. It will create jobs and strengthen economic growth for years to come.”
She also mentioned that the government is working to enhance the economy by making changes in laws and investing in technology to create better job opportunities.
Ruth Porat, who is the President and Chief Investment Officer at Alphabet and Google, said, “With this announcement, Google is investing in the UK and helping it reach its potential in AI, which can add £400 billion to the economy by 2030, while also improving vital services for the community.”
Demis Hassabis, the CEO and Co-Founder of Google DeepMind, shared that they started DeepMind in London because of the UK’s talent in technology. He noted that the UK has a rich history in tech and innovation, and this investment continues that legacy.
The new data center is designed to be friendly to the environment. It uses smart cooling systems to reduce water use and can even share heat with local homes and businesses for free. Over the last ten years, Google has helped train over one million people in the UK. They are now part of a group that aims to train 7.5 million people by 2030.
In Hertfordshire, Google is starting a Community Fund, managed by Broxbourne Council, to help local economic growth. They are also providing support to local charities and organizations that help with job training and skills.
Councilor Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Council, expressed her happiness about Google’s new data center in their area. She said the council has worked closely with Google to ensure that the community benefits from this development. Google is investing in local projects, which will positively impact the local economy.
