AMD and OpenAI have announced an agreement to provide 6 gigawatts of energy for OpenAI’s future AI technology. The first step will use 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, starting in the second half of 2026.

AMD’s strong leadership in high-performance computing systems and OpenAI’s pioneering research and advancements in generative AI position the two companies at the forefront of this pivotal time for AI.

With this agreement, OpenAI will partner with AMD to use its technology for large-scale AI projects, beginning with the MI450 series and continuing with future products. They will share their expertise to improve their technologies together.

This partnership creates a true win-win for both companies, enabling very large-scale AI deployments and advancing the entire ecosystem. As part of their agreement, AMD allows OpenAI to buy up to 160 million shares of AMD stock if they achieve specific goals. The first shares will be available when the first 1 gigawatt is deployed, and more will become available as the project grows to 6 gigawatts.

The unlocking of shares is also connected to AMD’s stock price and OpenAI achieving its goals.

Dr. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, expressed excitement about partnering with OpenAI to provide vast computing power for AI. She believes this partnership combines the strengths of both companies and helps advance the AI ecosystem.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated that this partnership is important for increasing the computing power needed for AI to reach its full potential. He believes AMD’s advanced chips will help speed up progress and share the benefits of AI with more people.

Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, mentioned that building the future of AI needs strong teamwork. Collaborating with AMD will help them create AI tools that can assist people everywhere.

Jean Hu, CFO of AMD, shared that this partnership is expected to bring in significant revenue for AMD while helping OpenAI build its AI systems. He believes this agreement creates value for both companies and will positively impact AMD’s earnings.

Together, AMD and OpenAI are working to create the infrastructure needed to support the growing demand for AI, combining their innovations to speed up the future of high-performance and AI computing.
