Amazon has announced the opening of a new AWS Asia Pacific Region in New Zealand. This initiative is to provide a wider range of options for developers, startups, businesses, and organizations across various sectors to run their applications from local data centers in New Zealand.
As part of this commitment, Amazon plans to invest over NZ$7.5 billion to build and operate these data centers, which will support New Zealand’s digital growth.
Prasad Kalyanaraman of AWS, said that the new region will help meet the growing demand of cloud services in New Zealand. This means that businesses of all sizes can use advanced technologies like AI and ML with a local data storage rule. By improving New Zealand’s digital services, Amazon wants to support new ideas and economic growth, making the country an important player in technology in the Asia Pacific region.
AWS is planning to create more places to store data, called Availability Zones, in different countries. This shows that they want to grow their cloud services around the world. They are also helping people in New Zealand learn new skills. AWS has promised to train 100,000 people in cloud technologies, and more than 50,000 people have already started training through programs like AWS Academy and AWS Educate. Additionally, they will hire more local workers to support their new AWS Region.
AWS partners with different companies in New Zealand to improve their services. Amazon is also focused on being more environmentally friendly and aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The new AWS Region will operate using renewable energy from the very start, thanks to a partnership with Mercury NZ, focusing on a wind farm project that contributes to New Zealand’s green energy goals.
